In Shallowater, Reading First really has mattered with both students and teachers. Focusing on improving the quality of Tier I instruction has resulted in reducing the number of students in need of Tier II intervention. Teachers have developed a wealth of knowledge about teaching children to read that has resulted in closing the gap among student groups and high scores on state testing. The number of students achieving at the Commended Performance level in reading TAKS has doubled. For students who have been in the program, the successes in TAKS have extended to 4th and 5th grades with Intermediate receiving an accountability rating of Recognized for the first time. In addition, every grade level doubled TPRI scores based on the number of students who were developed.
Evidence of how Reading First matters for all students is shown by the reduction of students identified as having a learning disability.
In Shallowater there truly are No Children being Left Behind.
