UPWARD BOUND COLLEGE PREPATORY PROGRAM AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY
Upward Bound is a College Preparatory Program at Texas Tech University. This program services students from 40 different High Schools within a 50-mile radius of the Texas Tech Campus. Upward Bound is currently recruiting 9th and 10th grade high school students for its 2009-2010 program. The program provides academic instruction, tutoring, counseling and advising, and social-cultural enrichment activities for students on Saturdays during the regular school year and for six weeks during the summer. Students live in the Texas Tech resident halls during the summer, at no cost to the student.
SHS will have a recruiter, Isaac Flores, here to speak to interested 9th and 10th graders on Friday, September 18th at 2:45 in the high school auditorium. The Upward Bound Program at Texas Tech University is currently seeking applicants in 9th or 10th grade who attend school within a 50 mile radius of the Lubbock area. Upward Bound is a college prepatory program that serves first generation high school students and helps them develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve success in college.
The program is offered at NO cost to qualified students.
A recruiter will be here on Friday morning, September 19th, to talk to all interested freshmen and sophomores. There are a limited number of spaces open, but hopefully someone(s) from Shallowater will be included!

The academic year component of Upward Bound consists of 24-27 academic sessions held on Saturday mornings on the Texas Tech University campus. Instruction is provided in college seminars, English, foreign language, literature, mathematics and science. Lunch and stipends are provided to the students following the academic sessions on Saturdays.
The summer component provides an opportunity for enrolled students to live in the universitys residence halls for five weeks. The students attend academic classes in ACT/SAT prep, English, language exchange, literature and composition, mathematics, science and special interest classes, such as computer building, mass communications, and theater arts. Students participate in various counselor-sponsored social and recreational activities during the evenings.
Participants in the Upward Bound Math/Science QUEST have interest in pursuing careers in mathematics, science and/or technology. Participants have the opportunity to work on a research project each semester, including poster presentations, slide show presentations and exhibits.
