TSI Requirements for College Courses |
SPC Testing Schedules and Information
Students may choose to take the Accuplacer, the Quick THEA, or the THEA to satisfy TSI requirements. The Reese Testing and Learning Center offers the Accuplacer and the THEA; the Levelland Testing Center offers the Accuplacer, the Quick THEA, and the THEA.
To learn more about how to register for these tests, when and where they will be given, what forms of identification to bring and what the cost will be, go to the following website:
www.southplainscollege.edu
When you get the above homepage, click on Admission and Records – Testing Center.
Click on either the Reese Testing Center or the Levelland Testing Center, or both if you don’t mind where you test. There you will see testing dates, testing fees, pre-registration information, items to bring to the testing center, and information about the test.
Remember, TSI requirements must be met before SPC will allow you to register for a college class, even a dual credit class.

Fee Waivers Available |
ACT offers each student who is eligible for free or reduced lunch TWO fee waivers to take the ACT. I encourage juniors to use one fee waiver in the spring of their junior year and then the other one during their senior year. Students can certainly take the test as often as possible, but ACT will allow them to test for free two times. |

ACT vs. SAT |
*material from sparknotes.com
Testing Philosophy:
ACT
The ACT strives to assess the knowledge you've acquired, meaning that the test focuses on subjects and skills taught in high school.
SAT
The SAT tries to assess "innate ability." It does so using tricky and confusing phrasing to determine your test-taking skills (i.e. your performance under pressure and your ability to identify what's being asked.)
Differences in Format:
ACT
Total Time 175 minutes (plus 30 minute optional writing test)
SAT
225 minutes (plus 25 minute experimental section)
Total Number of Sections:
ACT
4: Math, Science, Social, English (plus the optional writing test)
SAT
3: Math, Reading Comprehension, English (plus 1 experimental section)

2009 ASVAB Testing |
Juniors will take the ASVAB test in the auditorium on Friday morning, October 2nd. The test is a vocational aptitude battery consisting of ten short tests, covering areas of science, math, English, mechanical and electrical ability. While this test is very important for any student interested in joining the military, it is also a wonderful career investigation for every student. The test will provide information on each student’s strengths and weaknesses as compared to his/her career choices.
ASVAB Interpretations will be on Wednesday, November 4th, during U.S. History classes. |

2009 PSAT Test at SHS |
11th graders will have the opportunity to take part in the SAT’s PSAT/NMSQT program on Wednesday, October 14th. This is the only time that the PSAT will be offered this year. The PSAT is usually taken by juniors in preparation for the SAT assessment, but the exam can qualify a student for a National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT provides an estimated SAT assessment score so you can see if you’re on track for the college or career of your choice.
The test session will be limited to the first 45 juniors that sign-up and pay the fee for the test. The cost is $13.00 dollars. Checks should be made out to Shallowater ISD. Students that register for the test will receive a student guide. This booklet includes information about: common questions about the PSAT, tips for doing your best on the PSAT, sample test questions, and the use of calculators on the mathematics test.
Students or parents can receive more information about the PSAT by contacting Carol Johnsonin the counseling office. 832-4535 ext. 2206
Students need to visit and set up an account at www.collegeboard.com to receive newsletters and alerts for SAT and related college information.

2009 PSAT Test for Home-school Students |
The PSAT will be given at Shallowater High School on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009. All juniors are encouraged to register for this test.
Home-Schooled Students
If you are a home-schooled student, contact a principal or counselor at a local public or independent high school to make arrangements to take the PSAT/NMSQT at their school. Be sure to do so well in advance of the mid-October test dates, preferably during the previous June.
If you're a home-schooled student, your PSAT/NMSQT score report is sent directly to your home address. On the test day, when completing the basic information on the answer sheet, be sure to enter your state's home school code in the "school code" section. The test supervisor will provide this for you.
Search for schools in your area giving the PSAT/NMSQT.
Any home-school student who would like to participate in PSAT testing at Shallowater High School should contact Carol Johnson at 832-4535, ext. 2206 or Jim Jones at 832-4535, ext. 2205 to register for the test. Information about testing times, materials, etc. will also be available. |
