Wendy's High School Heisman
The Wendy's High School Heisman is the high school awards program that recognizes student scholar athletes and their accomplishments. In its 16th year, the program continues to touch the lives of high school seniors. A few years back we saw a change in the application process allowing students to nominate themselves and encouraging more students to become involved.

Created to showcase high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and community/school leadership, the Wendy's Heisman program celebrates the well-rounded student in a way that other student academic awards and athletic awards do not. As millions of high school students begin preparing their applications for the college admissions process, it's important to set yourself apart with unique distinctions-having a great college essay and top grades alone just isn't enough anymore to cut through the intense competition.

So as you prepare your online applications for the college or university of your choice, consider filling out ours, as well. Students are eligible if they:

*Are a high school senior and are graduating in the Class of 2010

*Have maintained at least a B average/3.0 GPA during their first three years of high school

*Participate in at least one school-sponsored, extracurricular sport

The deadline for submitting your application is October 3rd at 5:00 p.m. Students must have their applications completed by Thursday, September 23rd, for Mrs. Johnson to review.

American Legion Oratorical Program

Scholarships are presented to the three finalists in the final round of the national contest as follows: 1st place - $18,000; 2nd place - $16,000; 3rd place - $14,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified and participates in the first round of the national contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the final round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond
high school.

In this program students are required to give a prepared 8 to 10 minute oration on a selected area of the United States Constitution. Then they also give a 3 to 5 minute talk on a topic assigned at the competition.

Further information is available on the web at www.legion.org/programs/youthprograms/oratorical.

The Lubbock area contestants will be judged January 8, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post in Lubbock. The local contact person is Johnny Franklin and his number is 698-6945. Mrs. Johnson also has a list of the official rules in her office.
