The SAT Versus the ACT
The recommended way to truly determine which test best suits your test-taking strengths is to take practice exams for both tests and then choose the test
that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.
The SAT is traditionally thought of as a test that measures your critical thinking skills, testing your ability to analyze and solve problems in math, reading and writing. The ACT, on the other hand, is considered a more “curriculum-based” test, since it tests your academic preparedness for college in the areas of English, math, reading, and science specifically by calling on information you have learned in your high school coursework.
Three factors to consider when you’re deciding whether to take the SAT or ACT:
1. Investigate the admissions requirements for the schools you’re interested in.
2. Consider your test-taking strengths and weaknesses.
3. Decide if taking both tests is a good option for you.
Many juniors took the PLAN test as a sophomore and the PSAT as a junior. Compare these two scores and see if you score better on one above the other. You
can also take practice tests on several websites:

Texas A&M will host a Student Leaders of Tomorrow (SLOT) Conference for high school juniors and seniors on February 12-14, 2010. The SLOT Conference is unique in that it is primarily produced by college freshmen who are dedicated to helping others cultivate their own leadership and personal development. Students will have the opportunity to hear prominent speakers and participate in roundtable discussions that motivate individual growth and discuss pertinent topics not only essential for future success in college, but in life.

There will be a mixer the second night of the conference for the students so that they can relax and enjoy the friendships they have formed.
Registration opens November 2, 2009, and forms will be available on the website:

The SAT Versus the ACT
The recommended way to truly determine which test best suits your test-taking strengths is to take practice exams for both tests and then choose the test that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.

Discover Card Tribute Award
While there are not many scholarships for juniors, the Discover Card Tribute Award is one that recognizes excellence in high school juniors. This program features state and national scholarships, and any high school junior that meets the following criteria is eligible to apply:

• Plans to continue his or her education/training beyond high school in any accredited training, licensing or certification program or institution of higher learning.
Judging is based on outstanding achievements in many areas of your life. Judges are looking for high school juniors who:
• have diverse and outstanding accomplishments
• display initiative, creativity, determination and personal results
• have faced significant roadblock(s) or challenge(s).
Tribute Award winners come from all types of families, heritages,
geographic locations, economic and societal backgrounds. They are multi-talented; risk-takers; and all-around achievers. They have dealt with significant economic,
emotional, physical, geographic and/or social obstacles, and yet have achieved personally and in their communities, in spite of those challenges.
