ASVAB Testing October 2nd

Shallowater High School, in conjunction with the Department of Defense, will give the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery, Friday morning, October 2nd.

The ASVAB is a vocational aptitude battery consisting of ten short tests which cover the areas of General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Numerical Operations, Coding Speed, Auto and Shop Information, Mathematics Knowledge, Mechanical Comprehension, and Electronic Information. The results of the ten individual tests are combined to provide three “academic” scores and ten individual scores. The academic composites are Verbal, Math and Academic Ability; the occupational scores are Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reason, Mathematics Knowledge, General Science, Auto & Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, Numerical Operations, and Coding Speed.

The test results will be interpreted to the students when the school receives the results. Students will be given a “passcode” enabling them to work on the Occu-Find, for one year, on line at the website: www.asvabprograml.com. The Occu-Find is an excellent tool for helping students choose a career they would be suited for and enjoy.

There is no obligation on the part of the student in regards to the military services. The ASVAB is an excellent career test and provides information on the student’s strengths and weaknesses as compared to his/her career choices. There will be an interpretation on November 4th during U. S. History classes.

PSAT Test on October 14th

On Wednesday, October 14th, our school will provide an opportunity for juniors to take the PSAT/NMSQT. Even if you are not considering college, you should take this test.

Here are some other things PSAT/NMSQT can do for you:

*It measures the reading, math, and writing skills needed for college (and for success in most jobs and careers in today’s world). After the test, a score report will tell students how their skills measure up. Students can use it to find their “skill gaps” and then make plans to fill those gaps before college begins.
*This test gives students a chance to see how their skills compare with those of other students who will apply to college.
*For juniors, it is the first step in entering the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions for scholarships and recognition.
*The Student Search Service gives PSAT/NMSQT test takers the option to voluntarily place their names and addresses in a pool of college-bound students interested in receiving admission and financial aid information from certified colleges, universities, and scholarship agencies.
*It provides practice for the upcoming SAT exams.
*It even allows students to predict their SAT scores in time to work on specific skills, and that work may raise their scores.

The following website is an excellent source for PSAT information and practice:

www.collegeboard.com/psat

The cost for the test is $13.00. Bring your money and sign up in the library.
Dual Credit Update

Thirty-six juniors are enrolled in at least one dual credit class with SPC for the fall semester. Sixteen of those students are taking two courses! I am excited for these students as they begin the “college experience.” Students who take dual credit not only get a great financial deal ($135.00 for three hours and $234.00 for six hours), they get the opportunity to see what college courses are like and how they are different from high school courses. Ask any students who are enrolled now or any seniors who have taken dual credit and you will find out that assignments are different, timelines are different and grading is different. Watch and observe your classmates enrolled with SPC and decide if you might not want to get involved with the dual credit program next year. After all, they are considered “college students” and they do have some free time!
Remember you must make a “B” or better for this to count as a measure for the DAP graduation plan!

PSAT Results

PSAT results have arrived in the mail, and I will be helping students interpret their scores in the next few days. Forty-one juniors took the PSAT in October making them eligible to enter the 2009 scholarship programs conducted by NMSC. The PSAT measures critical reading, mathematics and writing skills and compares them with those of other juniors. The PSAT questions are designed to be the same as those on the SAT Reasoning Test as a reliable preparation for the college entrance exams. The scale of 20 to 80 is equivalent to the SAT scale of 200 to 800.

Go over your scores with your parents and teachers. Pay special attention to the “Improve Your Skills” section. This score report, along with your test booklet, is the best tool you can have to help you prepare for your SAT test this spring.

Each test taker will have access to My College QuickStart free of charge. This is an easy-to—use, online, personalized college and career planning kit comprised of four main sections: your online score report; your SAT study plan; college majors you indicated you were interested in, and college major and career matches that are compatible with your general interests and personality type.

Your access code will be found on your paper score report. You will have access to My College QuickStart throughout your high school career.

West Point Summer Leadership Seminar

The United States Military Academy will host two sessions of the 33rd Annual Summer Leaders Seminar in June 2008. The first session is scheduled for June 7-13, and the second session will be June 14-20.

The Summer Leaders Seminar provides outstanding high school juniors the exciting opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic, physical and leadership-development programs at a service academy that features small classes, a caring faculty, professional career preparation, and a foundation for future graduate study.

800 eleventh-graders nationwide who meet the following guidelines will be invited to participate:

• In the top fifth of their high school class;

• Pursuing a college-preparatory curriculum;

• Strong PSAT scores;

• Demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office, and honors earned in organized athletic and extracurricular activities.

• To apply for the Summer Leaders Seminar, students should visit the following website:

admissions.usma.edu and fill out the application form online prior to March 31, 2008. There is a rolling admissions program for the seminar, so students are urged to complete the online application as soon as possible. Several brochures are available in Mrs. Johnson’s office.

West Point will notify applicants of their admission status by May 1. Although students can request a specific session, the United States Military Academy reserves the right to schedule the attendees in either of the two sessions.

The SAT Versus the ACT

The recommended way to truly determine which test best suits your test-taking strengths is to take practice exams for both tests and then choose the test

that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.

The SAT is traditionally thought of as a test that measures your critical thinking skills, testing your ability to analyze and solve problems in math, reading and writing. The ACT, on the other hand, is considered a more “curriculum-based” test, since it tests your academic preparedness for college in the areas of English, math, reading, and science specifically by calling on information you have learned in your high school coursework.

Three factors to consider when you’re deciding whether to take the SAT or ACT:

1. Investigate the admissions requirements for the schools you’re interested in.
2. Consider your test-taking strengths and weaknesses.
3. Decide if taking both tests is a good option for you.

Many juniors took the PLAN test as a sophomore and the PSAT as a junior. Compare these two scores and see if you score better on one above the other. You

can also take practice tests on several websites:

• have faced significant roadblock(s) or challenge(s).

Tribute Award winners come from all types of families, heritages,
geographic locations, economic and societal backgrounds. They are

multi-talented; risk-takers; and all-around achievers. They have dealt with significant economic,

emotional, physical, geographic and/or social obstacles, and yet have achieved personally and in their communities, in spite of those challenges.

The SAT Versus the ACT

The recommended way to truly determine which test best suits your test-taking strengths is to take practice exams for both tests and then choose the test that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.

You
