The Girls State program is sponsored through the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas. Girls State is a nation wide program with sessions held in all 50 states each summer. The duties, rights and responsibilities of citizenship are taught through the actual participation in this "mythical 51st state." The "citizens of Girls State" will actively participate in various political activities of Texas State government: political parties, the legislature, the judiciary, city, county, and state government.
Every hour of the day is carefully planned so that each girl will have a definite and integral part in the function of Girls State and the opportunity of learning for herself that her government is what she makes it. A visit to the State Capitol will be included in the program which offers the girls an opportunity to assemble in the halls of our legislative bodies and meet state officials.
The entire program is non-partisan and free from propaganda.
The girls are properly chaperoned. Counselors are in constant attendance. No girl is allowed to leave the grounds except on scheduled trips of the entire group.
Girls State session will be held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas, from June 13, 2010 through June 20, 2010. Over 500 young ladies from high schools all over the state participate in this program.
SHS will have the opportunity to send one girl. SISD will pay the cost for the entire program, exclusive of transportation to and from Seguin. The deadline to register our student is February 27th.
