Law Day Essay Contest |
The Lubbock County Bar Association will select one winning essay from a Lubbock County high school entrant and present the author with a $500 scholarship. This scholarship will be presented to the winning essayist at the Lubbock County Bar Association Law Day Banquet on April 28, 2011. The winning essay will be selected by March 30th and it will be entered in the statewide Law Day Essay Contest on April 1st for an opportunity to win an additional $1,000.
Students from 9th grade to 12th grade in all Lubbock County high schools are invited to take part in the essay contest.
The essay topic is "Explore how lawyers in the past and present have promoted justice by defending unpopular clients." T
The essay must be no longer than 500 words, typewritten, and double-spaced. It must show critical analysis and historical evidence.
The essay must be received by the Lubbock County Bar Association by March 25, 2011 at 5 pm.

2011 Congressional Art Competition |
Randy Neugebauer has announced the 2011 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery. Held annually since 1982, this nationwide c ompetition has allowed each Congressional District to highlight the outstanding artistic achievement of one talented student. The winning entry will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in the United States Capitol for one year. This is an exciting way for high school students to showcase their artistic talents and crteativity as well as represent West Texas and the Big Country.
The competition welcomes the participation of any interested high school student. Interested students should submit an electronic version of their final piece to the following email address: lisa.brooks@mail.house.gov
In the email, students must also include their name, address, phone number, school, grade, and the title and medium of their work.
All submissions are due no later than April 26, 2011.

Pearl Harbor Contest |
High school students have the chance to win as much as $1,000 in an essay contest sponsored by the WWII Museum.
In your own words, tell us if you think it is important for students to "Remember Pearl Harbor." And, if so, why and how should they remember it?
This is not a research paper. Your essay will be judges foremost for its originality, clarity of expression, and adherence to contest theme, as well as its historical accuracy, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

American Legion High School Oratorical Contest |
The purpose of the American Legion High School Oratorical Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest" is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students.
Any student in high school is allowed to enter the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. Scholarships are presented to the three finalists in the final round of the national contest as follows: 1st place - $18,000; 2nd place - $16,000; 3rd place - $14,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified and participates in the first round of the national contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the final round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond
high school.
In this program students are required to give a prepared 8 to 10 minute oration on a selected area of the United States Constitution. Then they also give a 3 to 5 minute talk on a topic assigned at the competition.

The Lubbock area contestants will be judged January 8, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post in Lubbock. The local contact person is Johnny Franklin and his number is 698-6945. Mrs. Johnson also has a list of the official rules in her office.

Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Contest |
The focus of this historical essay project is to research and write about the rich and diverse contributions of African Americans in Texas. Conducted as a statewide competition, high school students research and write history about the influence and contributions of African Americans in their own communities.
Essays are judged in ten geographical regions, resulting in 30 essays selected for the State competition. The top three essay winners receive $2,500 for the first place essay; $1,500 for the second place essay; and $1,000 for the third place essay.
The theme: "African Americans in Texas: Past and Present"
Deadline: All essays must be postmarked no later than Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.

Kohl's Kids Who Care |
Each year, Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program rewards kids ages 6 to 18 for their good deeds. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the program, and over 11,000 kids have been recognized and awarded more than $2.2 million in scholarships and prizes. This year Kohl's plans to recognize an additional 2,100 kids with prizes ranging from $50 Kohl's gift cards to a total of $10,000 in scholarships.

2011 Career Poetry & Poster Contest |
The National Career Development Association is pleased to announce their 45th Annual Poetry and Poster Contest. The theme for this year’s national contest is "Celebrating My Career Dreams". As in past years, the talented students and individuals here in our diverse state are sure to make a strong showing in this contest. The contest is designed to celebrate, inspire, and emphasize the importance of career development and interest. Working together, we can help our fellow Texans make their career dreams a reality.
There are three categories:
1. Poetry of which can be in any acceptable Poetic form; (e.g. cinquain, free verse, diamante, haiku, limerick, metered, rhyming, blank verse).
2. Poster Traditional (C1 Category) using any of the traditional drawing styles --pencil, poster paints, magic marker, acrylics, or oil.
3. Poster Mixed Media (C2 Category) utilizing photos, clipart, graphic art software, collage, or mixed media.
The top three State winners in each category are then sent on for judging in the National contest sponsored by the National Career Development Association. 2011-12 ACT Poster Contest |
ACT wants to encourage students to tap into their creativity and possibly qualify for a scholarship--through the national ACT Poster Concept Contest.
Students can enter the contest by designing a poster that encourages other students to attend college and to take the ACT® as their college entrance exam. We will use the winning design concept to produce the 2011-12 ACT test date information poster we distribute to high schools nationwide.
The Contest is open to high school students who are residents of any one of the 50 United States and who are eligible and applying for 2011 or 2012 admission to a two-year or four-year college in the United States. (Juniors and Seniors only)
The first place winner will receive a $5,000 nonrenewable scholarship to his or her college of choice. Second and third place winners will receive $2,500 and $1,000 scholarships respectively.
The Official Entry Form and poster must be postmarked on or between October 18, 2010, and January 31, 2011. The Poster Concept Contest winners will be announced the end of February 2011.

2011 Co-op Teens Power Texas Contest |
Record a 1-to-3 minute video about electricity, and you could win $1,500!
The 2011 Co-op Teens Power Texas contest is coming up soon. The contest will open January 31 and close on April 1. Students in grades 9-12 whose parents or legal guardians are a current member of an electric cooperative in Texas can participate.
You can explore any topic - the history of electricity, how it is transported to your home, efficiency or any other aspect you can dream up.
The first place prizewinner will receive $1,500, and if they are sponsored by their school, the school will receive $1,000. The second place winner will receive $500, and four runners-up will each get a check for $250.

2011 MISS TEXAS TEEN USA PAGEANT |
The 2011 PAGEANT will be held in Houston, Texas on November 26-28, 2010, the Friday, Saturday and Sunday following Thanksgiving.
Registration for the Pageant is officially open!
Entrants must be single, never married nor have given birth to a child, a United States citizen and at least a six-month resident of Texas. They must also be at least 14 years of age and under 19 years of age to qualify.
Each entrant will be judged in three categories consisting of Personal Interviews, Swimsuit, and Evening Gown. Performing talent is NOT a requirement.
The winner of the Pageant will embark on a journey that will include receiving a fabulous prize package, including cash, wardrobe, travel, personal appearances, and a $45,600 scholarship to Lindenwood University in St. Louis, Missouri. The four runners-up and semi-finalists all receive scholarships totaling over $450,000.

SPEC Teen Video Contest |
In conjunction with Texas Co-op Power magazine, South Plains Electric Co-op will begin accepting videos for the 2010 "Co-op Teens Power Texas" video contest on Monday, February 8, through Friday, April 9.
"Co-op Teens Power Texas" is a statewide competition open to high school students residing with a parent or legal guardian in a household served by an electric cooperative. Participating students, either working alone or in a group, will create a one- to - three minute video providing information about a developing area of renewable energy.
The first-place winner will receive $1,500. The second place video will receive $500. Four runners-up will each receive $250 for exemplary achievement in one of the four juding categories: Creativity, Educational Value, Youth Appeal, and Technical Quality.

The Christophers' Annual Poster Contest |
Students in Grades 9 through 12 are invited to interpret our theme "You Can Make a Difference" in an original poster. The Christophers is a nonprofit organization founded in 1945. They use media to spread two basic ideas: "There's nobody like you, and you can make a difference."
