EDME Session January 19th
Early Dedication to Medical Education (EDME) is hosting a session over "International Medicine" on the evening of Thursday, January 19th! Come find out about this "foreign" field of medicine from medical students who have learned abroad!

There will be free food and giveaways, too, so DON'T MISS OUT!

Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) at UNT
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is an early college entrance program which has been transforming lives since 1987. Alumni include scientists, engineers, physicians, and faculty members. Some 16 similar academies have since been created nationally, but TAMS remains the only one exclusive to Texas residents.

TAMS students complete their last two years of high school concurrently with the first two years of college at UNT. They accomplishy this while enjoying a rich social life with age mates. Graduates earn 57 or more transferable college credits, and complete their degrees either at UNT or other universities nationwide.

Applications for the TAMS 2012 fall entering class will be accepted through February 27, 2012. Admission criteria include sophomore status, a competitive sophomore SAT, teacher evaluations, and 7th through 10th grade transcripts.

TTU College-Bound Retreat, March 5th
Want to go to college and don't know how? Hispanic Scholarship Fund can help! The Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar Chapter at Texas Tech University invites Area High School Juniors and Seniors to attend an informational retreat with great keynote speakers and awesome workshops! Lunch will be provided!

*Be prepared by taking as many advanced classes as possible

Red Raider Academy at Texas Tech
Following are the websites and applications for two of Texas Tech's biggest summer camps are now available online.

The first camp is RED RAIDER ACADEMY and it is held June 15-18th.

WHAT IS IT?
Red Raider Academy is a college-prep summer camp designed to help students start their journey to a four-year degree. They learn about our admissions process, explore a broad range of academic programs and experience student life on a traditional college campus. They also meet students from all over while getting the inside scoop on test-taking strategies, essay writing and how to have fun as a Red Raider!

WHO CAN ATTEND?
High School Juniors who are first-generation college students and/or demonstrate financial need. Students can be a part of Red Raider Academy the summer before they begin their senior year in high school.

HOW DO STUDENTS APPLY?

Red Raider Experience at Texas Tech
The second camp is RED RAIDER EXPERIENCE and it is held July 12-13th.
WHAT IS IT?
Check out academics, campus life and special programs like study abroad and undergraduate research. Spend the night in the Honors College residence hall and tour top-notch scientific and performance facilities while students learn about degree programs in the area of their interest. Don’t worry – there’s plenty of time for fun, too!

WHO CAN ATTEND?
Students who have at least a 1200 SAT (critical reading and math), 26 ACT or hold top 10% class ranking, can be a part of Red Raider Experience the summer before they begin their senior year in high school.

Opening Doors/Abriendo Puertas
The South Plains College Office of Enrollment Management will be hosting Opening Doors/Abriendo Puertas on Saturday, December 5, 2009, on the Levelland Campus, with registration at 9:00 a.m.

Opening Doors/Abriendo Puertas is a pre-college academic outreachy program designed to assist first generation and Spanishy speaking students and their families in preparing for college.

Students in attendance will be welcomed by current members of the Hispanic Student Organization and receive an informational packet which includes a SP
C catalog, a New Student checklist, and a contact list of faculty and staff by department and program. Students will choose from hands on program sessions offered in both English and Spanish including Admissions, Financial Aid, College Success and Campus Exploratioh.

The morning will conclude with lunch at 12:00 p.m.
Lunch will be served to participants following the workshops. Students will be engaged by a panel of current first generation SPC students, and door prizes will be awarded including Accuplacer testing waivers and five $1000 scholarships!

College Readiness Workshop
Texas Tech will sponsor a free College Readiness Workshop for juniors and seniors on Saturday, September 19th.

Students will have the opportunity to take a practice ACT/SAT exam and get inside tips on admissions, academics and college life!

This event is open to high school juniors, seniors and their parents.

Individual and Small Group Guidance

1. LEARN Talent Search representative on campus twice a month to aid students with college admissions and financial aid
2. Schedule career, college and military recruiters to speak with students.
3. Take seniors to SPC College Day and to Texas Tech University Day.
4. List and publish college preview days. Students have two individual college days per year.
5. Promote Texas Tech University’s Upward Bound program for first-generation and/or low-income students.
6. Participate in Texas Tech’s Project Future Leaders program for economically-disadvantaged students
7. Work with WIA’s Youth Zone to identify and aid “at-risk” students.
8. Work with Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the New Century Leadership program

Parental Guidance

1. Eighth grade parent orientation meeting to explains class choices, career pathways and four-year plans to parents
2. Dual credit meeting to explain SHS dual credit program and policies to parents
3. Senior parent meeting in the fall to discuss application procedures and deadlines, scholarships, financial aid, etc.

Testing and Assessment

1. PLAN test for sophomores
2. PSAT test for juniors
3. ASVAB test for juniors.
4. ACT/SAT study nights for juniors and seniors. English and math teachers also do classroom preparation, such as SAT Vocabulary, SAT Question of the Day, etc….
5. DeVry Career Investigation for seniors.

Higher Education and Post-Secondary Training

1. Utilize the Go Center and display information on colleges and universities, college admission testing, financial aid, career opportunities and military information
2. Advertise, file, and distribute college applications.
3. Assist students with the application and financial aid process.
4. Offer students the chance to earn twenty-seven (27) dual credit hours.
5. Offer six Tech Prep programs with twenty-two classes at SHS. (Business Education, Innovative Career and Technology, Family & Consumer Sciences Education, Technology Education, Health Science Technology Education)
6. Diversified Career Preparation class that allows students to earn credit while working.
7. Distribute scholarship booklets, monthly bulletins and updates through the Go Center, announcements, newspaper and website.


Recognition for Students

1. Top Ten Percent at Awards Banquet each year.
2. Texas Scholars announced at Awards Banquet.
3. Distinguished Achievement Plan graduates recognized at Awards Banquet and starred on graduation program.
4. Recommended and Distinguished Achievement Plan graduates wear medals at graduation.
5. Students participate in Groundhog Job Shadow Day in their chosen field.
