Measures
You will notice on the above classes that certain classes count as 1 or 2 measures. This has to do with the DAP graduation plan.

In order to graduate on the DAP plan, students must complete certain courses and earn at least four measures. A measure is actually a class that is taught at the college level and could earn that student college credit.

Any dual credit course counts as a measure if a student earns a B or better in the course. Each semester is a different class so that students that take their junior English dual credit have the opportunity to earn 2 measures.

Tech Prep courses also count as measures since they count as college credit.
Cosmetology
Cosmetology Career Pathway at SHS

Students interested in a career in cosmetology have an opportunity to begin working towards certification while still a student at SHS. The counselors have spoken with Karan Fowler, the director/instructor of Lubbock Cosmetology College, and she has given us some information about her program.
• A student must be 17 years old to begin her program. The program begins in June, so a student must be 17 in June to participate the following year.
• Students will have to leave SHS at lunch and go directly to the Cosmetology College, located at 3602 Slide Road #B-18. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the College. They will be expected to spend at least three – four hours per day there, and more if possible.
• Students will be expected to pay for the program and supplies. The cost for the program will be between $13,000 and $14,000. Payments will need to be worked out with Karan or Terry Fowler. Some money will be due in June to begin the program.
• Registration and payment plans need to be completed by the first of May.
• Students must be on course to graduate and have at least fifteen credits to begin the program. A student will not be allowed to forego a TAKS Remediation course or a required/recommended course to participate.
• Lubbock Cosmetology College teaches courses at a college level. The vocabulary and reading requirements are difficult, and students must plan to spend a large amount of their own time studying.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to begin their post-secondary training while still in high school. Students need to be committed to the program, as it is very time-consuming and the material is difficult. Most students will have to give up any extra-curricular activity due to the time requirements at the College. While it is certainly not for everyone, some students may benefit from this opportunity.
For more information about the program itself, please contact Karan Fowler at (806) 785-0677. Her email is lubbockcosmo.com.
