Comprehensive College & Career Readiness Program
Student and Classroom Guidance
1. Every student in CATE class every year.
2. Every student on a career pathway for four-year plan.
3. Eighth grade classroom orientation to explain career pathways and class choices
4. Freshman Fish Camp
5. Sophomore Careers Investigation (PLAN)
6. Junior Careers Investigation (PSAT, ASVAB, Groundhog Job Shadow Day)
7. Senior College/Careers Investigation (SPC College Day, LISD College Night, Allied Health Day at SPC, Government Career Day at Lubbock Courthouse, Career Expo, Texas Tech University Day & SPC “Sneak Preview”)
8. Student Council Summit Career Sessions
9. Motivational speakers such as Chad Foster (materials for students, such as his book Teenagers Preparing for the Real World
Individual and Small Group Guidance
1. LEARN Talent Search representative on campus twice a month to aid students with college admissions and financial aid
2. Schedule career, college and military recruiters to speak with students.
3. Take seniors to SPC College Day and to Texas Tech University Day.
4. List and publish college preview days. Students have two individual college days per year.
5. Promote Texas Tech University’s Upward Bound program for first-generation and/or low-income students.
6. Participate in Texas Tech’s Project Future Leaders program for economically-disadvantaged students
7. Work with WIA’s Youth Zone to identify and aid “at-risk” students.
8. Work with Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the New Century Leadership program
Parental Guidance
1. Eighth grade parent orientation meeting to explains class choices, career pathways and four-year plans to parents
2. Dual credit meeting to explain SHS dual credit program and policies to parents
3. Senior parent meeting in the fall to discuss application procedures and deadlines, scholarships, financial aid, etc.
4. Team with Panhandle-Plains Higher Education Authority to offer a Financial Aid Night for parents in January.
5. Team with LEARN to offer two “Finish Your FAFSA” nights with senior parents.
6. LEARN representative on campus twice monthly to meet with parents and/or students.
7. Updated “Guidance & Counseling” link on SISD website.
Testing and Assessment
1. PLAN test for sophomores
2. PSAT test for juniors
3. ASVAB test for juniors.
4. ACT/SAT study nights for juniors and seniors. English and math teachers also do classroom preparation, such as SAT Vocabulary, SAT Question of the Day, etc….
5. DeVry Career Investigation for seniors.
6. Link for testing/assessment on website. (Practice sites, tips and hints, test day information)
Higher Education and Post-Secondary Training
1. Utilize the Go Center and display information on colleges and universities, college admission testing, financial aid, career opportunities and military information
2. Advertise, file, and distribute college applications.
3. Assist students with the application and financial aid process.
4. Offer students the chance to earn twenty-seven (27) dual credit hours.
5. Offer six Tech Prep programs with twenty-two classes at SHS. (Business Education, Innovative Career and Technology, Family & Consumer Sciences Education, Technology Education, Health Science Technology Education)
6. Diversified Career Preparation class that allows students to earn credit while working.
7. Distribute scholarship booklets, monthly bulletins and updates through the Go Center, announcements, newspaper and website.
Recognition for Students
1. Top Ten Percent at Awards Banquet each year.
2. Texas Scholars announced at Awards Banquet.
3. Distinguished Achievement Plan graduates recognized at Awards Banquet and starred on graduation program.
4. Recommended and Distinguished Achievement Plan graduates wear medals at graduation.
5. Students participate in Groundhog Job Shadow Day in their chosen field.

Juniors need to look at their ASVAB Summary Results sheet and find their Use Access Code. This will be printed in the bottom righthand corner of their score sheet. This code will allow them to use the Occu-Find and FYI website which is a great career investigation tool! You can find out the following about any job:
* the training and education needed
* earnings
* expected job prospects
* what workers do on the job
* working conditions
This access code will work through July 15, 2009. |
