What is dyslexia? Simply put it is " a language disorder of constitutional origin". That means it is a problem with which the child is born.
Characteristics:
*Problems with single word decoding. (Comprehension can be higher than reading level.)
* Insufficient phonological processing and awareness of common sounds of the language.
*Difficulties are unexpected and often unnoticed until pencil/paper tasks are involved.
Myth
The biggest myth about dyslexia is that it is a problem with letter reversal. Dyslexia or related disorders is not just a problem of letter reversals, it is having a deficit in the areas of spelling, handwriting, alphabet, sequencing and phonological awareness.
Reading to your child
All children need to be read to each day. Hearing a proficient reader is one way to improve your child's oral reading skills. Reading to children includes those up until high school age. The recommended minimum is 21 minutes a day. Vary material on level and subject. Reading to children above their own reading level fosters development of concepts and vocabulary.
